“The Sin Eater walks among us, unseen, unheard
Sins of our flesh become sins of Hers
Following Her to the grave, unseen, unheard
The Sin Eater Walks Among Us.”
With this little ditty, I was hooked. I had never heard of this tradition of matching foods to a person’s confessed sins, and then having a designated person eat those foods to take the sins upon themselves and send the dead person to a happier place, sin free. This historical novel revolves around May, a shunned orphan girl in 16th century England, who by becoming a sin-eater, also falls into palace intrigue and murder.
